At SOS Office Furniture, our history is more than a timeline — it’s a reflection of the people, relationships, and commitment to service that have shaped who we are today. For more than half a century, our company has grown through hard work, trusted partnerships, and a unique tradition of employees becoming owners. As we celebrate our legacy, we honor the generations who built our foundation while continuing our mission of delivering quality office furniture, exceptional value, and dependable service for the future.
Founded on a tradition of service, value, and trusted relationships, SOS Office Furniture’s story traces back to 1930 with the opening of Dealers Furniture on University Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota. Originally serving both home and office furnishing needs, the company evolved over the decades as customer needs changed. In 1976, Tom Mergens launched Surplus Office Supplies, introducing quality used office furniture solutions before expanding into affordable new office furniture options.
The company continued to grow through a unique tradition of employee-led ownership. After joining the business, Mark Skinn later purchased the company in 2000 and helped guide its evolution into the SOS Office Furniture brand. Dave Dobbelman, who began his journey as an installer and repair technician, returned to the company in 1999 and carried that same hands-on service mindset into ownership in 2016.
In June 2021, SOS Office Furniture entered its next chapter with the opening of a new 40,000-square-foot facility in Vadnais Heights, creating more space to showcase solutions and better serve customers throughout the Twin Cities area. Continuing the company’s long-standing tradition of leadership from within, Chris Schmitt became owner/operator in 2024, bringing the same commitment to quality products, exceptional value, and customer-first service.
SOS Office Furniture has surpassed it's 50-year anniversary in early 2026. The company remains focused on the same principles that built its reputation: reliable solutions, expert installation, outstanding value, and helping businesses create workspaces built for the future.
